For your consideration, Garrett Park Music presents this 1950s Maccaferri G40 Deluxe acoustic guitar.
The 1950s Maccaferri G40 Deluxe is a unique, mid-century archtop guitar designed by Mario Maccaferri and manufactured by the French American Reeds Manufacturing Company in the Bronx, NY. Released in the spring of 1953, it was a high-ambition follow-up to Maccaferri’s successful plastic ukuleles. This instrument is a true piece of history, harkening back to a period of experimentation in guitar making. Distinctive features include a Gypsy Jazz body shape, white molded/arched Dow Styron plastic top with F holes, molded Dow Styron plastic tortoise pattern body, D shaped neck with a 12" radius fingerboard and the original medium frets, 24.5" scale length, 1 7/8th" nut width, Original bridge/trapeze tailpiece and tuners, The neck thickness is .82″ at the first and .92″ at the 9th frets.
This guitar is in good shape, despite its many years of playing. There are some signs of wear including a slight twist in the neck and high action past the 8th fret making this a candidate for a future neck reset. There is also a slight separation of the headstock from its plastic backing though this does not affect the playability of the instrument and can be restored by the right luthier. Despite the issues, this guitar is still playing great up to the 8th fret and has stellar projection. Its plastic construction may seem strange at first, but once you get to playing it, the guitar has a solid tone and clear, crisp resonance. A very unique piece, this Maccaferri G40 includes its original hangtag and period correct chipboard case.
